thanks its a brand new tank, thank you for your help

Then tank will only work for discus if its a tank to breed discus, if you buy 2 discus one will die due to dominance and the other discus will be living in hell with no other discus companions. This is why minimum tank size for discus is 55g as you can fit 5 discus in there for there whole life considering they can reach a 9" diameter.and considering you tank is only around 20 gallons they would be very crapmed.

a definate no for discus im afraid unless you can fork out around £150 for a breeding pair which you can have in that tank by themselves.

Discus do not always get along in small groups. Most discus keepers recomend 5 or more. This is way to many for your tank. A proven pair can be kept together in a tanks that size. IMO Don T.

I currently have a pair in my 55 gallon and one is clearly dominant and stressing out the other by chasing him into a corner and forcing him to stay there for a bit, but that only seems to happen for about 10 minutes or so after feedings. Other than that they swim together and seem to get along ok. Im planning on adding 2-3 more but Im not having much luck finding any quality fish locally at the moment. In fact just today I went to 3 places and the discus stock was crap. Every store I went to just had a few Red Turqoise runts. My favorite store normally has about 5-6 different varieties but all but the red turq tanks were empty.

If its a new tank take it back and get something bigger. If you're going to spend a few hundred quid on fish I dont see why you cant spring for a larger tank.

hi,
you could keep the fallowing:
5 x-small
4 small
3 medium
1 medium large
0 full adults.
i got my first discus today... it is x-small... i have it with lots of tetras, cat fish, and others... it is in a 37 gallon eclips. i added a new heater and a perfect 280 emperor filter.
discus love plants and hiding places.
well, now that i think about it, people breed full adults in 20 gallons... but that is only temporary.
Have fun, enjoy it, and keep it simple.

Hi,
this may seem stupid, but it is true. if you make their space smaller, they should stop picking on each other. for example, the 25 gallon the topic starter said wouldn't be a bad idea for a while.

You really need to sort out your factsbefore giving others some really bad avice. I suggest researching your facts, as they are wrong. You say 1 medium sized Discus in that tank? They need to be in groups. 5 small ones may work for a while, but they don't stay small forever.

I have a feeling that poor Discus won't last long. He will probably cower in the corner of the tank, and not eat until you get him into a proper tank with some other Discus. They need to be in groups. You say you have a lot of catfish. Most catfish don't mix well with Discus, they are much too fast, and spook the Discus at night.
