how long should lights in my tank be left on mine are on from when i wake up to when i go to sleep is this too much?

As far as im aware, you shouldn't really leave your tanks on for more than 10hrs a day, although this is just a rule of thumb, leaving tank lights on for too longer periods of time especially if there is a lack of cover in the tank, can be quite stressful for fish. What sorts of fish do you have?

What time do you wake up and what time do you go to bed?

the lights go on around 8am and off around 10:30pm

yes i would say that you have them on for to long, i have my main tank light on from 9 till 7 then i switch to moonlight from 9 till midnight.
