I am cloning my ten gallon filter onto a new 10 gallon filter because the old one keeps needing to be convinced that it still works. (It keeps breaking.) I also switched from sand to gravel, and I have a bunch of the old gravel in there that I want to take out. I used some rocks from the previous set-up, so any beneficial bacteria that is on them will be there permanently.

I made these changes last weekend, I think. I know it probably isn't cloned yet, but when can I take the gravel out, or take the old filter out? I can't clip the hood on, and I keep almost knocking it into the aquarium. The gravel also keeps me from setting up the rest of the decor.

So when will I know it is fully cloned?

You can get rid of the gravel and a tank should be fine as long as plenty of material in there from before is still on there. You might want to buy cycle, just in case!

No, the only things from the old tank are a few pieces of slate (I would say slightly larger than fist-sized if its clumped otgether)- I don't think it would be enough to keep the tank from cycling. (Could be wrong?) Even the glass is new, its just some slate, filter, and cup of gravel that are from the old tank.

You might still be right- I just wanted to clarify that the slate dosen't account for much of the old tank. :good:

well, cycle doesnt really work that well. if you are to get something of that sort, get bio spira and make sure its in a refrigerator when you are buying it. the best thing to do in your situation is to cut a piece of whatever media you are using and just throw it in the new filter and wait a week or so
