as some of you know i bought 2 platy's last thursday and i wonder if you can tell me if they always breed? iv kept a pair of guppies, mollie, swordtails and platy's one at a time in my tank in the last few years and only the guppies seem to have bred? my water must be ok quality as my gouramis are breedig and so therefor is it possible my platy's might?

my female platy is orange and so therefor shouldnt you see a black gravid spot if she is pregnant? i dont think she is as the male isnt showing any interest in her... i would love some fry and to leave her to have them naturally and see if any survive.

any ideas on what i could do? or is it just a sit down and see issue? :shout:

thanks x :good:

If you have healthy platies, mollies, swordtails, guppies, endlers etc. they will and do breed. Finding fry is another matter. Unless you provide adequate cover, most fry from most livebearers will end up eaten soon after they are born. I find mollies and endlers are fairly easy on the fry eating and often have survivors with only minimal cover but swordtails or platies can be voracious fry eaters. I never see a dark gravid spot on a molly and only see them on the lighter colored platies and swordtails. Stop frustrating yourself looking for a dark smudge of color and instead look for a growing and squared off abdomen. It is a much more reliable indicator and the fish's body color does not interfere with it.
