I'm keeping guppys again but when I had them before I only managed to keep them alive for 8 months, whats the longest your guppy has lived up to, thanks.

My friend has had guppies for about 7 or 8 years now and she said that her's live to be able 2 years before they bite the dust. I haven't had that much luck here but she was saying that if you use tap water and it has calcium in it that your guppies don't live as long. -_- no idea whether or not it's true but it may explain my guppy....issues lol.

thanks for your reply.

I have a female guppy that I raised from a tiny fry and she's now 13 months old. :) She's still alive too!

Sasha that's great never managed to get one above a year, do you do anything different.

apparently their life span is 2-3 years... but when we buy them they are normally a good size, eg a year old already.

Our 6 that we got in our first tank lasted a year before a couple died and the longest was about 16 months.

he, he... two weeks :) I got 3 as my first fish, two died within 3 days, the last one just kicked the bucket now. Ooh, dear

Most guppies you buy from a pet store are of such poor genetics from literally hundreds of generations of inbreeding. You'd be luckily to have one of these last 3 months.

On the otherhand, a quality strain from a known breeder can have a decent lifespan. I've had males from some strain live almost 3 years.

I have a dam with thousands of guppies in it. I also have 2 oscars that love them. The problem was that the oscars would gorge themselves and wouldnt stop till the last guppy was killed. So rather than go and get enough each day I decided to get a second tank going and take what I need from that tank to feed the oscars. But within 12 hours of putting the guppies in the tank I am begining to loose them.
Within 24 hours they are all dead.

I tested the PH if the dam water and its very alkiline, and the tank is nuetral.
Is this likely the problem or may it be a temperature issue ?

yes the ph is the problem if you didn't acclimatise them properly, what the dam ph reading.

Hi Wilder,
The dam PH was around 7.4 He have had a long dry spell here and the water in the dam isnt very good as its not been freshened up for a while.

But saying that there is thousands of not millions of guppies in there. I usually take a slice of bread up and with a scoop net it takes me about 30 seconds to get maybe 100 .

Would you advise raising the ph in the tank for them ? I really only need to keep them for 3-4 days but that not happening at the moment.
