Just curious as to how long most plants last in an established "low tech" tank. My tank is a 36 gallon and I have 2 Anbuis Nana attached to some drift wood and just planted a Ozelot Sword. I also have a moss ball. I have an 18w T8 "grow light" for the tank and am not currently using any ferts or CO2. They are planted into a cheap gravel substrate, I put a root tab in with the sword so it should be good i hope :)

I would like to add more plants as time goes on and the substrate will be changed to a more natural gravel with a florite type product under the gravel. What is the general life of these aquatic plants?

I have had anubias and moss balls since I started my first tropical tank and they are still doing fine. I also have hygrophila polysperma that is a clipping from the first one I ever put in my tank (has grown loads and been trimmed many many times) but is still doing fine.

Once you reach a certain number of plants, though, the available nutrition will drop and that will affect your plants... if you plant to get a lot more you may find you need ferts and CO2.

No need for CO2 just might be worth adding trace ferts if your in it for the long run, the more plants the more ferts are needed and the fish will only produce so much.

Thanks guys, good to hear that they last! I will prob. start dosing ferts when i change my substrate and plant a little more heavily.
