Over the last 3 of weeks my amano shrimp have started dying off one by one, I have lost 4 out of 6. The are feeding fine, full bellies etc.  Suddenly one will slow down and slowly start to change colour, going a dark reddish brown remaining in the same spot then turning to pink and dying over a 24 hour period. They were all 2" in size when I rescued them 14 months ago. I know the lady that had them before me had them for a couple of years, so I am just wondering if they are just dying from old age.

Wow, thats a tough question to answer really.

Have been trying to research online to find out how long Amanos can live for, the general consensus seems to be 2 to 4 years but have seen one or two folks state their Amanos are over 5 years old, not sure about that tbh.

So i will just state the average being 3 years

Cheers Charlie, so at a rough guess then they are over 3 years old. Sad to be loosing them, but hopefully its not a tank problem then.

Mine lasted about two and a half years, then like yours Star, almost all together, they fell away within a few weeks of each other.

I bought 5 amanos on 18 Feb 2009. Yes, I do keep records of everything I buy.
One died straight away, a female died two years ago, a female died last summer. There were two males in the tank when the second female died but I only found one when I moved the fish to a new tank last month and there's been no trace of a dead shrimp (presumably eaten). So apart from the one that died within a week, I've had one live three years after purchase, one four years, one between four and five years and one still alive after 5 years.

Thanks Dougie & Essjay it does seem more likely an old age thing.
