How Long Can Bacteria Survive?

If the filter is inside the tank, the bacteria will survive a long time, but may die back to some extent. External canister filters are the most sensitive in this regard because the connection with the oxygenated surface level of water in the aquarium is minimal. Filters inside the tank are a bit better. But either way, if your filter is likely to be out of action for few hours or days, it's best to open it up and place the media in a bucket. Even without an air pump, enough oxygen will get into the water to ensure most of the bacteria survive. (With that said, filter bacteria aren't likely to die back completely even in a canister filter, but may go dormant, and it may be a few days before they boost themselves back to their original efficiency.)
