Was wondering how people have their external filter set up inside?

mine is set up with coarse foam at the bottom to medium then fine with filter floss ontop then the rest (top part) is sintered glass.

reason being trying to remove as much rubbish as possible before hitting the biological media preventing it clogging up , extending the usability and productivity.

Mine I have the rings with a coarse sponge over that, then the next tray up has some little efhimech I think with the filter floss. Both of my canisters only have two baskets.

Mine much the same as yours Stimo, Fluval 206 & 306 so they have initial coarse foam in the slide in screen, with the fluval Bio foam and a layer of poly wool on top of that in the same basket, the next two baskets are full of Biohome Mini Ultra sintered glass Biological media. I could never understand why people let their biological media get clogged up with solid waste and that's exactly what happens when you have a polishing pad on the last stage of your filtration!

exactly!

i'm running biohome as well i think it's great stuff promoting both anaerobic and aerobic

I dont worry about mine clogging up they are cleaned out monthly. As for set up I use filter floss in the top basket, bio in the rest.

My Fluval 405 I bought second hand and there are only the baskets of media and the four initial vertical sponges. I think there may be some sponges missing from in the baskets but am unsure about this.

Looking at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLg2MuAaWXQ  it seems no, there aren't extra sponges in the trays of media, just a carbon bag which I don't have or want. Maybe it would be a good idea to take the media out of the tray for carbon and put sponge in there?

depends what you need most in there if you could make use of more biological put that in if not try more foam for mechanical

Currently I'm set up with coarse sponge followed by ceramic rings then carbon but I'm thinking of adding some floss and possibly losing the carbon

I have some lovely volcanic rock samples which look micro-porous, hmmmm.
