So yes, read here the sticky, profile, various places online, talked to friend and oscellaris clowns (nemo look-a-like) don't really belong in a 5.5 gallon tank. So I've read it usally gets 2.5" in captivity sometimes bigger. My questions, is it possible to put one in a 5.5 gallon tank even if you monitor the tank levels very carefully and have optimal living conditions or is it just a big no-no, because I'm going to be monitoring my tank closely and have optimal living conditions, and yes I already know I can do this, have a FW tank setup and this tank used to be a planted nano, but I don't want to do it if it's not good for the fish. If it's a no then I'll just get a clown goby since no other fish are really suitable. I will be getting a refractometer, placing order this weekend hopefully along with pc lighting to make a reef tank, have aquaclear 20 refugium, 9lbs LR, maxi-jet 400 along with a mini-rio pumping 46gph (not sure if I'm keeping this) I think that's all that you would need to know. The answer is probably a no but just wanted to make sure. If there's a smaller species that I could keep let me know.

Please understand I do not want to keep it and will not keep it if I can't provide a good home.

Thanks. :good:

I voted yes, since they can survive in one.

But I personally wouldn't put any marine fish in a 5 gallon tank, though I understand that opinions will differ.

Which is why I'm asking, thanks for telling me yours. It does seem people are either no fish in 5 gallon or one fish, though I've read clown goby's can work since they rarely exceed 1".

I don't want to sound like I don't want to take your advice and am going to add a clown fish, I'm not or at least not yet, I'd like to see what everybody else has to say.

i voted no. The clown could survive, but do you really think he would live a happy life in such a small tank? I would say go for the clown goby they stay very small like said above, but also perch most of the time. so dont need much room o swim like a clownfish would :good:

That's why I'm asking since I've never kept a clown before and wouldn't really know if it would be happy though I'm thinking no because not a whole lot of space to swim.

I would also say no. Just watching my perc. I know that it really does need a lot of room to swim around and is very active (even during the night). The clown goby would be a good idea. good luck!

Hmm. I'm guesing that thinking not enough swimming space was correct.

Thanks for all the reply's :good:

Does anybody think I can keep two clown goby's or is that pushing it too much?

thanks again.

I think one clown goby would be best. Good Luck,

I think you could pull of two, just because they are very small and they tend to "hang out" places and not swim around. Get a green one and a yellow one :) If you decide to go this way, just snatch up the two smallest ones that your LFS has to offer. That's obviously my opinion though

Putting a clown in a 5 gallon is absolutely horrendous, not trying to be rude, but it really is.

As for a clown goby, idk, I wouldn't put them in that size of a tank personally.. I have mine in a 30 gallon and it's VERY active and jumps between rocks during the day.

How big do the clown fish grow to? I saw ones in the pet store which were about 3cm long... so I'm not sure if this was their full size!

No where near it. Id say atleast 2-3". Especially big healthy, established specimens.

Wow....2-3 inches??? thats amazing! The tank I saw was just set up the day before so these were more than likely youngsters!!

I personally think you can put a clown in a 5 gallon tank. The big problem would be that the water quality would be a huge issue. Also, the clown can get very stressed, even if your water is perfect.

As for the clown goby, i have one and he usually stays on one side of the tank. My tank is 30 gallons and hes not really a big swimmer. And from what i know you cant really keep two clown gobys in one tank, especially that small, unless its a yellow clown i believe.

Best of luck.
