How Do You Prime A External Filter?

My new eheim 2213 external filter arrived today

Whats the easiest way to prime it?

Stick the intake in the tank, suck on the output until water starts coming up the output tube. Then put the output back in the tank and plug the filter in.

How long will it take before the water starts coming through? (Don't want a mouthfull of tank water!)

Don't worry, you won't suck it enough for it to come out the other end. The aim of the excercise is to fill the cannister completely with water- once that's done, you can plug it in so it can pump it out again.

Ahhh ok so you suck it untill water goes up the intake tube and into the filter.

May sound like a silly question but how do you know when its full and ready to be turned on?

Should be able to get it setup tommorow now i know what i'm doing.

Can the same be acheived by simply filling the cannister with water then turing it on?

It's easier to suck on it, you need to get the syphon action going and just filling the cannister won't get rid of all the air.
