Just curious, and thought it would make a good thread.

My angels are George and Martha Washington, my clown plec is "Mr. Wiggles"(My wife's decision) The cories are Pierre, Jean Claude and Fifi, the common plec is Frenchy,(All French names cause they're bottomfeeders). The balas don't have names cause they look the same and the Pristella's are "The Mob"

The lobster is Lola, cause of a sign on a fish market in Point Lookout NY that is now gone for condos. Anywho, they had a big picture of a lobster and it said "Lola the lobster LOVES you!" (It was close to one of my friend's houses so I saw it all the time)

How 'bout you?

Most of our fish's names are based on puns or tenuous links to their species name or appearance.

Examples:
  • Martha (Fahaka Pufferfish- I'm not explaining this pun!)
  • Stewart (Common pleco- because he's Martha's tankmate)
  • Cookie (Our rescue fahaka puffer - he's one tough cookie)
  • Broccolli (Huge Starlight Bristlenose - because his bristles look like broccolli and when we bought him we took him home in a polybox that had previously contained broccolli
  • Julian (Ornate Bichir- Named after the Doctor On Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
  • Achillies (Fire eel - a pun on "Achillies Heel")
  • Snicket (Lemon Spotted green Plec - Named after Lemony Snicket, the author of the series of unfortunate events books.)
  • Smaug (Dragon Puffer- Smaug is a Dragon from Tolkien's The Hobbit)
  • Smidge (Dragon Puffer- because he's a smidgen bigger than Smaug)
  • Archie (Target Puffer- Archie is a pun on 'archery'..which has targets)
  • Jif (Royal Panaque- I think 'panaque' sounds a little like 'pan cake' and In Britain, pancakes are most often serves with sugar & lemon juice, The leading brand of lemon juice is 'Jif' - I told you some of them are tenuous!)
  • Roy (Chubby Plec - named after Roy Chubby Brown, a non-funny British Comedian)
  • Josie (Sultan Pleco- his scientific name is L. joselimie
  • Sherman & Panzer (Armoured shrimps- They look like little tanks)
  • Twiggy (farowella catfish- looks like a twig)
...and so on...

I usually pick names that match the fish's personality or looks... or they remind me of someone or something. For example, I once had a betta named Dagan. (Dagan means 'little fish' in some language I can't remember.)

my big syno is called Mokey because he is part of the Mochokidae family

my ocellifer is called Oscar because of the fish in Shark Tale (my daughters idea)

my albino cat is called Piss-ant because he was so small when we got him

we have a danio how we call Jerry(atric) because he is that old he has lost all his colour

2 filter shrimps called Murky & Lurky (after some cartoon characters from years ago. if anyone knows let me know

2 orandas(diff tank) called Sid and Nancy after the sex pistols

A ACF called Lola after the Kinks song because we don't know if it is a boy or girl

a thin lined loach called Paki because that is what he was sold to us as

a yo-yo loach just called yo-yo

red finned shark called rainbow because of his colours

a gold fish called Frodo because he has been through ALOT and hasn't died

all the others all look the same so it's hard to name them

Hi, the answer you are seeking, are you ready for it?

RAINBOW BRITE of course.

As for naming my fish, I go by their personalities a bit, and the way they look or who they remind me of...
Like the Purple Marauder, from Poison Elves. PM tries attacking the main character Lucifer a few times (a hot assassin elf).

I have decided to call my female betta SheDevil as of today because she harrasses anyone who tries to get close to her Dwarf, I had to remove another female betta from the tank yesterday, for her own sake. She attacked angels, she even had a go at the Purple Maruader. I think she is really cute though, so she doesn't quite fit the profile in the movie...

I call my blue gourami Rami, because it's cute and so's she... :D

Cheers, Xan

My crab is called Sebastian :D (thats right, Little Mermaid!!)
The zeba danios dont have names because they all look the same (although the one who recently died was called Sid, no particular reason, but i could tell him apart so he was the only one to get a name)

First off - hellohefalump
Dennis (goldfish) - just looked like a dennis
. Thats just too darn funny!

I like all my names to start with the same letter as the species. It just sounds cute.

Simon the Snail - I have had Sam, Stanley, Syd, and Sampson

I have 7 platty babes yet to be named.

Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup my female barbs.
Brick, Boomer, and Butch my male barbs.
I don't know which is which since all 3 males and females look exactly alike. But I was watching tv one day and it was the episode of the Power Puff Girls where they fight the Rowdy Ruff Boys, and there just happened to be 6 B names!

Detxer, Dieter and Daria the Danios

I havent named my cories or ottos yet.

- edit - I just noticed that they all are named after Cartoon characters. Coincidence? Looks like I need to find 7 P, 3 C and 3 O names from cartoons. I'll be at it all night now!

I've been picking a theme for each species and running with it:

Bettas -- All named after angels (some fallen angels)
Oscar -- Aristotle the philosopher. The next oscar I get will be named Socrates
Senegal Bichir -- Eligos the demon
Midas -- WAS named Marie Antoinette, but since he seems to be a male, I changed it to Antoine... but I hate that name, so now he's Gabriel... because he looks like a Gabriel

All my other fish are named "That One"

I only name my two fancy goldfish, one has two different eyes and he reminded me of tweety pie so called him that, and my other fancy goldfish is called orange pip my neice named her that.
