How do you pick your fishs' names?

ROFL! funny thread! I must admit, the only fish of mine that has a name is my female Betta (Ruby). She was a rescue job, and a success story, and I like the name Ruby...that is all.

The rest of the fish are just fish, and go by their common species names. If I got into the habit of publically naming any of them, my kids would go to town and they would all have Pokemon or Yu Ghi Oh (sp) or Sonic names, names I cannot pronounce, nevermind remember!

I don't believe my fish feel depersonalised by not having a human name, I am guessing my cats hate the names they have too! The gerbils get called many things, one of them being Cat Food

I dont name all of my fish but some times names just occur to me. For example my common plec is Nessie because after adding some new baby fish i realized that they must think shes a huge sea monster. I named 2 of my angels Jean Luc and James because the day I bought them Star trek generations was on while I was acclimating them. They were pressed up against the side of the bag almost like they were watching the tv. Last my parkinsoni rainbows got named larry Curly and Moe because one of them had a black dot right on the top of his head. Unfortunately the only one left is Larry because Big Al's sells devective fish that dont last very long. He was the biggest when I got them so I guess it was survival of the fittest.

3 sailfin plecs are the algae-had (aljihad)

Yellow lab is blondie (and an assortment of others but that seems to be the one my wife likes)

my fancy gouramis are the bulldogs cuz they look like bulldogs

and the rest are yet to be named other than oh-so-creative names like: "that brown one" "orangey" "yellow" and "the bala shark"

Dyson, Eubank, Henry & Hoover - panda corys.
Specks - black & white speckled molly (female)
Posh - white sailfin molly (male)

Ani-i thought he was a girl and he wa small and there was a girl in my 7thgrade class named Ani so yeah.
AmyII-named after Amy Lee of evanescence..il explian the II part farther down.
Flame-he is orange he looked like a flame.
Lightning-he is white and he is very fast. my mom calls him Tweeter .

_Zack the one week wonder-he was named out of random and he lived in my house for a week so the one week wonder part was added and he mad my garden in the US taken care of by my Uncle very pretty he was white blue and purple..i never guessed my BF in 8thgrade would be named Zack. i told him about the one week wonder and he laughed.not to mention i was a dumb fourth grader and kept him in a lidless cold 1/3 gallon hex near an airconditioner! .

Aaron-named after Aaron carter. he lived for 1 year he was a red delta or half moon.

AmyI-named after Amy lee. she was the first she was Gus's Gf i never bred them and i regret it badly. her somewhat daughter(they were both from the same walmart) AmyII is taking on her legacy. she was a blackish brown crowntail. all of the pics of her are so blurry and they are on my main computer..you cant tell she is a crowntail so i wont post them.

Gus-my most recent death.my mom named this one after a budgier (parakeet) named Gus she had when i was 4(never let your mom name bettas its creepy) . i think he'd be Emppu or marco ..poor guy died in december he is swiming in heaven w/ Zack Amy and Aaron.he was a 5 yearold soon to be six yearold betta. he was so peacefull he could live w/ Amy or even a male!! i miss the bugger he loved me i knew that since he liked to eat my finger

i dont name my fish unless they do something to deserve a name.
- My raphael- " the beast" or "why wont u move?"
-Festivum- Festivus ( from seinfeld)
Rainbow cichlid- Jack because we bought him as a Jack Dempsey
Common Plec- Oddball. Opposite of common. Pretty random really

Only some of my fish have names, simply things we used to call them because of events that we had to name them in ... and they stuck. we have:

Popeye (Female ember that got popeye and lost her eye cause of it. Kind of stuck)
Blacky (A fish that came with our black neons, but we still havent figured out what it is)
Little One (My female dwarf puffer, she's absolutely tiny compared to our male)
Humphry (male dwarf puffer, has a humpback)
Biggy/Biggie (our first and biggest corydoras fry)
Hugh (Second biggest fry, classed "huge" which sounded like Hugh)
Dew (Banjo catfish, see below)
New (Other banjo catfish, together when repeating in a certain way, you can make banjo sounds according to my boyfriend)

RIP -
Scar (Female danio that as a fry hurt herself on a sharp rock ... ever since she had a lovely scar on her side, kind of looked like @ ... unfortunatly, she passed away a month ago)

I let the fish choose their names kind of so not all my fish have names. I also can tell apart fish that people might generaly consider to be the same so some of my danios and tetras etc have names too. I have a zebra danio called pearl, stripe the zebra danio and karrat the zebra danio (after the measurement for gold), kitty and retrospect are 2 of my cories, I have a micky mouse platy called minibyte, a swordtail named sibilance, a bulldog plec called interstellar (after the person who bought the fish for me - her name was Stella ), another platy I call stardust cause of her color etc... I've also called zebra danios silverfin (died of TB), spot (died of a very bad case of mouth fungus while I was away)and rip (had a torn tail fin - jumped out and died unfortunately), pirate the pearl gourami (has been given away), peppered orange was a platy that also died when the fungus killed spot and I had a bronze cory called lamb and a blackfin cory called pandaleaf who also died from the fungus. I tend to name small community fish more than fish I breed or which I'm not keeping permanently - mainly cause those are the fish I watch the longest. I also named all the fish I had when I was younger but it's difficult to remember now... my latest goldfish was called comet though

my balas are Huey Duey and Louie..because they're always bothering other fish or getting in trouble, by gouramis are scrooge and oliver, because one is so mean to the other helpless one and my tetras are the rat pack
