how do you guys fill up your tank???? do you use a garden hose??? becuase i have a 55 gallon and dont know how to fill it.. there is no water source near my room because are basement isnt totally finished what should i do???

when i have to put more water in my tank during a water change i just use a jug. but because your tank is alot bigger than mine then doing it that way might take a while lol.

If you use the garden hose, make sure the water from it is the same temperature as the water currently in the tank. I know that my hose is really cold water, so when I do changes I fill a bucket, leave it out in the sun for a while until the temperature is the same, and then add dechlorinator and put it in the tank. Also, make sure you run the hose for a bit to be sure the water that was sitting in the hose is all run through.

EDIT: If you mean how do you INITIALLY fill up your tank, disregard my post because I sound like a maroon.

Wow, I thought we are talking about the initial fill-up before adding the fishes... ;)

Of course, you should fill up the tank first, let it sit with the heater on for a while, add the water conditioner and the filter then start cycling...

I just use a watering can that i bought just for that job, takes a while but that way i can add some hot water in first then the cold so the water is much the same as the tank, takes about 30 mins to add the wate back on a 30% water change.

With my other posts i have put in i am currently doing it daily to get rid of nitrate . . .. grrrrr

For an initial set up I used a garden hose

for water changes I use a bucket. back and forth back and forth :p

I have a 40 litre rubbermaid bucket..... I prepare a batch of water in that, then take it to the tank and use a small general purpose submersible water pump to put it into the tank.

Water Changes -
We have 2x 5Gal buckets, so we fill it up with cold water then add Boiling water (opposed to stagnant warm water-tank water) to bring it up to temp. Adding W/C of course......

If its a new setup - we let the heater do the temp work ;)

We have a heavy duty pine lid/canopy to our tank, so we put the buckets on top of there and syphon the water into the tank, which is 10yards away from the kitchen - in the living room :)

HTH

I use a hose for all my water changes as well as initially filling tanks, the common suggestion that you must equalise the temperatures before you can add water to the tank is a myth. Providing you are only doing average sized water changes of 10% to 20% the temperature of the water will not drop enough to bother the fish, just keep a eye on the thermometer as you fill the tank and if it drops more than 2 degrees celcius add a little boiling water from a kettle to keep it up. Dropping the temperature a little via water changes is a commonly used method to trigger spawning. I have 12 tanks from which i change around 90 gallons of water a week and have never had any problems from it.

Before anyone asks when re filling the tank during a water change i add the conditioner as the tank fills, one tsp before i start the hose and then the correct ammount as needed.

Do you mean you add it to the water your adding? There and then?

I do the same, i get the water, add the correct amount of w/c for that volume of water and add it!
The reason i ask is becasue i have heard ppl to leave it to stand over night etc....
I have been told off for not doing this b4 :/ but nowhere does it say on my bottle, leave water to stand?

Sorry, i dont mean to hi-jack the post, il shut my face now :dunno:
