I am new as you can see and I was wondering how do you tell a female mollie and a male mollie apart I am asking this for future reference because sadly one of my mollies died from ich and I was to late to notice it waa. But I could really use the information because I am going to breed mollies sometime. and maybe guppys :hyper:

If you have ich problems, you should address that first before worrying about breeding. Mollies are very susceptible to poor water conditions, which is why brackish water is recommended unless your water is kept immaculate. It is their natural environment and allows them to handle lesser water conditions.

With that said, if you look at the anal fin on the fish. This is on the underside, closest to the tail. On males it will look more like a tube than a fin.

Male

Females tend to have a more triangular shaped anal fin.

Keeping livebearers in ratios of 3:1 females to males is a good ratio, because if there are too few females, the male will constantly try to mate with that one female, stressing her out.

hi,

go into tropical chit chat>"so my tanks ready" posted by Hero Dave

notice the first picture, im hoping its black mollies that you have but the difference is the same with all mollies

the bottom one is a male note his top and bottom fins and the more arched tail
above him is a female look at the difference in fins, ignore the size difference as she is still a youngster

hope this helps
Darren
