While cycling my new tank, the water has turned slightly brown/yellow, it isn't dirty though as i can see through it easily but i am sure it's just the 2 pieces of bogwood i put in there. I did give them both a short soaking before i put them in the tank nd started cycling. The only other stuff in there is some gravel and slate which i washed anyway. The brown colour has disappeared quite a lot since i started cycling although it is still quite brown. Will the colour disappear soon and how long will it take if so? will it harm my fish if it is still in there?

cheers!

it will disapear, you could add carbon to your filter or do some water changes, but i have heard that some fish actally like the tannins

It wont disappear 100%

tannins give a tank a cool brackish look! my tank currently has tannis and i love it

Brackish look?? I think you mean a mangrove swamp look or blackwater. Brackish has minimal if any tannis in it.

How long did you soak the wood for? Usually it's recommend about a weeks time. Personally I do like a bit of tannis in the tank however if you want to get rid of them you'll need to do about 50% water changes daily for a week or so, there will be some tannis in the water regardless however it won't be very noticeable.

I think tannin stained water can look pretty good, and, allegedly, the fish like it too.

However I can understand it becoming annoying if there is too much but this can be helped by boiling the wood before it goes in the tank. Though it doesn't sound bad in your case so I would leave it :good:

cheers for all of your advice! i think i will leave it as it is if it does no harm!

On a related note (if the OP doesn't mind a thread hijack!), does anyone know how long it would take for a mangrove root (at least, that's what I think it is) to stop leeching tannins?

I bought a bit some time back, and have been soaking it for a couple of months now, it's still leeching like crazy.

I've got no problem with a slight tint in my tank, but seriously - after two months, it turns the water to the colour of strong tea within a couple of days.

Should I keep soaking, or is this a lost cause?
