I have come back to keeping tropical freshwater fish after a 2 year break. I have bought a 50L Dennerle Scaper's tank. I want to grow live plants and keep red cherry shrimp and amber tetras. Can you advise how deep I should make the substrate? I have bought some shrimp gravel but not sure how deep it needs to be. Thanks for any advice.

Ambers...im guessing you mean embers? Shrimp gravel....maybe made by fluval?

Hard to answer the question on depth. Generally 1 1/2 to 3. But this greatly depends on the substrate. Slopes and irregular terrarium is all the rage and adds a nice touch. There are ways to built up the substrate when doing this. I like a deep substrate. However you just need to understand that this can lead to anerobic pockets. I suggest you research this on your own.

Yes, I meant Embers. Autocorrect strikes again! The gravel is Dennerle shrimp gravel and is inert. Do you mean inches or cm?

Inches sorry
