How Deep Is Too Deep?

My friend's snake died, so he gave me the tank he was in. Its 23 gal, at 17in x 24in x 13in (D x L x W). I know Bettas prefer shallow water, but I'm really thinking about putting some females in there (I love my male, but I want to try females). Would they be alright in a tank this deep, or should I just look for something else to put in there? If so, how many could fit comfortably?

that tank size would be just fine for females. just remember to clean it exceptionally well with bleached water(1 part bleach to 19 parts water i believe) rinse it well and let it dry for a day or two before setting it up.
