How Deep Do Mts Burrow?

I would like to have some in my betta tanks. As the bettas eat pellets or bloodworm there is virtually no waste food hanging around in the tank, so hopefully the population would stay in control.
I have a thin layer of clay cat litter under about 1 inch of sand though. If they stirred that up, it would make a right mess! Would they go that deep?

They move so slow that it shouldnt be a problem. I have the same thing in my two small planted tanks, an inch or so of sand with topsoil underneath. No mess at all!
