Hi guys, started another 24G/90L tank from scratch this week and so far have been doing a fishless cycle for almost a week now.
I have angels in my other 55 gal tank and I'm looking to make this tank a gourami tank.

I was wondering how compatible the following gouramis would be in the tank together

honey/opaline/pearl

I've kept a honey with an opaline before and they got along well, but I also had a blue gourami which chased the honey but was bullied by the opaline, very weird so I moved them out.

All advice would be appreciated and I'm wondering if I could keep those following 3 gouramis with a small school of tiger barbs and a bolivian ram. Tank has plenty of plants, driftwood and rocks for hiding places too btw. Thanks.

From what I've read, mixing gourami species can be a bit risky and isn't advised.

Ye, I'm worried about that but if its possible and has worked for other people I'm willing to try it. The following gouramis I listed are also the more passive and timid kind so maybe that factors into something.

I guess it also all depends on the fish. Some fish are just a bit more aggressive (personality wise) than other fish even though they are the same species. So it would definately be trial and error even if it worked for others. I would be most worried about the honey gouramis, the other fish would be considerably larger than it and I doubt it could take as much abuse as the other gourami. Opaline/Gold gouramis are suppose to be the most aggressive. Dwarf gouramis are said to be a bit more peaceful than those.

There is nothing timid or shy about Opaline Gouramis. They are just a color variation of the Three Spots just like the Golds & Blues.

Honey Gouramis with Pearl Gouramis should be okay though, or you could switch out the Honeys for Dwarf Gouramis. They're supposedly compatible although I haven't put my Dwarf in with my Pearls because of the mean Opaline female in that tank.

Thanks was leaning towards honeys and pearls. Would they do fine with 5-6 tiger barbs and a bolivian ram?

I tried 5 Tiger Barbs with my Gouramis and they failed the test. They just couldn't keep from nipping at the long feelers of the Gouramis. I had to return them to the fish store.

I've had 2 honeys, 1 pearl, 1 moonlight and a 3 spot in the same tank for about 6 months, no trouble yet!

I've kept a 3 spot with the honeys once and the 3 spot kept chasing it lol. I just bought a honey today as the only fish in the tank and he's very curious about everything :hyper:. I will probably look into adding a pearl gourami and BN Pleco over the weekend as well. Might give the tiger barbs a test run next week as well to see how they handle the other tankmates. Wish me luck.

UPDATE

Added 5 tiger barbs to my tank with honey gourami. So far its going great they are active and dont even pay attention to the honey. Plan on getting another tiger tomorrow for 6.

I know it doesn't seem to make sense but I've read that Tiger Barbs are less nippy in larger groups and if kept in odd numbers, as in 7, 9, 11, etc. I'm not sure why or how this works but that's what I heard. :good:

Keep a close eye on them though and good luck!
