I can't tell for sure MewMew. The washed out color on your male is either a poor quality picture or is a picture of a hybrid. The hybrids have very nice patterns to them that naturals do not have but they also lose a lot in the intensity of their colors compared to a natural. The twin swords are more typical of a hybrid but I do have a nice male with a sword who is a natural endler. That by itself would not rule out the possibility of a pure male.

My endlers look more intense but don't have as many colors so i m guessing yours are hybrids, compared to mine. But like Oldman said it is hard to tell. Also the dorsal fin is too colorful to be pure, pure endlers usually have a single color one, or a clear one.

The first 2 pics look like typical endler types but again not as bright. cant say for sure.

However the last pic is a cross breed. if they all came together then u have to say their a cross.

The reasons
  • Dorsal is far to long.
  • Dorsal to much colour.
  • Double sword (wild endlers do not show true swords, although with breeding botton swords have been breed).

They're cute, and very colorful by my standards. I don't know, though.

I really think that PlatyGirl has it right. Unless you are going to try to sell fry, it does not matter as long as you like them. I keep a colony of unselected wild types as a maintenance colony because the real wilds are a bit short on habitat and I can't see losing a species because of pollution. On the other hand, mine have almost no market value because so many of the hybrids look better to other people. My stock is soon to be cut back to only 2 tanks because I need the room for other species but my endlers are just nice little fish that I don't mind looking after. If people truly want a wild type endler, I am always happy to give them a few to work with. I do not even try to ship though.

If I ever do end up getting another tank, I'd probably add some endlers. Do they work with platys and a dwarf Gourami?

thanks guys, the endlers are very vibrant, it was just the camera flash that washed out their colours a bit

Im not too fussed all the same to whether they are hybrids or not, would have just been nice to know!

and to Platygirl11 i know that platys will be fine with endlers, and after some reading im sure a dwarf gourami will be fine to, but dont quote me on that as i have never had experience with these guys!

I have never seen endlers in the US, although I'm in a rather isolated area without a decent fish store. They're really quite pretty. You learn something new every day :)

Grace, both Hotdogoramer and I are in the US too. The endlers are fairly easy to find at club auctions or over the internet. Local fish shops don't seem to stock them but they don't stock Limias, Heterandria formosa or goodeids either. They only stock fish that they know they can sell off in a week or two. Having a fish in a tank for a month would not be acceptable at most LFS in the US. That means the only livebearers you will see is guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. They don't even carry the better quality in those fish because the price would mean having to wait for a specialist person to walk in who knows their value and is willing to pay it. We are back to stocking nothing that is in the shop for a whole month.

Do you know of any good websites to buy endlers from? (Are there any?)

where abouts are you?

Ive checked a few websites but never found any, i seldom see them around =[

Look at swampriveraquatics if you are in the US. Adrian made his living selling almost nothing else for a while. There are always lots of people selling them on Aquabid including swampriver, they are listed as Livebearers - wild type. Today Adrian has 5 listings for them. This is one of them, http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auc...&1242706209
