How Can I Tell If My New Fish Is Pregnant? Im Still Learning.

hay guys any help at all......she seems to be really stressed even scared
is she givin birth or just scared any advice? please "H"

Okay, it seems you are validated now since it says you are a member and you posted in the Livebearer section.

Now, about the Platy. She's pregnant. Almost all female Platies are, since they are usually kept with males and can store sperm for up to 7 pregnancies. Earlier in the thread, you asked if you could keep her in the breeder net. The answer is No. Breeder nets stress them out. Stress can cause them to abort the fry, have birthing troubles, or even die. You seem to be experiencing her having stress issues right now, so take her out.

You don't want to keep pregnant fish in the net for more then 2-3 days max. After that, you'll want to take her out, and preferably leave her out. Timing is essential, if you want to use breeder nets/traps. Add some floating plants into the tank and let her give birth there. Some fry should still survive, especially with hiding places.

I just skimmed the thread, but I noticed gestation period. It's about 4 weeks, give or take a little bit.

Take a look through the pinned topics, and FAQs. You will find them very helpful, and they should answer a lot of the common, first-birth questions. :) I apologize if I missed questions, as I said, I skimmed. But the FAQs and Pins should take care of most of them.

After that, if you have any questions, ask away. I'm also moving this to the Livebearer section, where more Livebearer people should see it and get back to you ASAP if you have questions. :good:

i have decided guys to not take her out of the net this morning as she was quite happy and didnt seem stressed but like i have said in other post i will leave her in for another 24 hours and if then no fry i will get her back into the main tank asap.....is my 10 Gallon tank small? and how many fish could i have in there?

Yes, your tank is on the small side. Not many fish will fit in there. What do you have in there currently?

What are you basing her "being happy" on?

hay my tank is a 10gallon i have 4 male guppy 3 female 2 platys and a sucka thing? is that to many as they seem fine i wanted some more but what should i do?

Oh, okay, you're full then. As for the Guppies, you should have 2-3 females per male, to prevent stress on the females. Is there anyway you could take some males back, and get more females? Also, what are the sexes on the Platies? They should also be 2-3 females per male. The "sucker" could be anything, but most likely it will get too big for your tank. Take a look here, and see if it's one of those fish: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=101658

It probably is, that's the common "sucker" fish. You'll definitely want to get rid of him, or get a MUCH bigger tank, because they can get to 12", 18" is more common for that type. :X

oh my word lol...also once i have had this 10 Gallon tank up and running a while i might look into a large tank but as its in my room it cant be to big...what size would you say i should go for???

A general rule I've found to be true with tanks is buy the biggest you can get! If you don't you'll end up wanting a bigger tank later on lol.

Very true.

If you don't want to spend a ton of money on a large tank, check out eBay and classifieds. You can usually find some really good deals there.
