A WORRIED UPDATE: my male yellow lab is franticly zooming about the tank, building 3 differnt nests and being very territorial, he is also bullying the female.

Sounds about right, Have you noticed that everyone stocks with a 1m-2 or 3 females the reason being if you do have 1m and 1f the female is going to get very stressed from the constant male attention and it will get worse if she does breed.

Have you looked into venting yet as i said its impossible to sex these from looking at them and you might have 2 males !.

I have vented them and the female definatley has a larger vent, if i where to keep the female in a seperate tank how would i know when she is ready to spawn?

There always ready but you should notice some breeding behavior like the male doing a shake in front of her then swimming away as if he is trying to lead her to a spawning site.

How big are they and how long have you had them

I think i have had the male 4 weeks and the female 1 week, i rearanged the tank when i introduced the female, the female is just over 3 inches and the male just under 4 inches. but all the male seems to be doing is chasing the female and niping her. :/

Thats a big size to add them at but it should calm down soon as for the breeding it could take a couple of months yet until the female feels safe and ready.

Your tank is a bit of an odd set up to have malawis in, the acra needs a low ph and the labs need a high ph the others should be ok but not perfect, normally a malawi tank is just malawis as not many other fish can put up with there aggression levels even labs are aggressive compared to most tropical fish.

If i was i would decide which way to go either a malawi set up or community.

the shop which i got the labs from has no more, if i could get another female from another shop would it lower the stress for the other female?

Yes it would, ideally labs do better in groups of 6 or more.

My most aggressive fish an afra has 5 females to keep him in order and he still chases all of them.

Dont forget you need to have a look at your setup if your going for a tank with african cichlids.

what would u recomend that i should remove or add to the tank if i am to have more labs

Most of it if you want to keep african cichlids.

4ft tank 30 gal (and i got it for free!)
4 x clown loach (3m 1f i think)
3 x chinese algea eaters (dont have a clue what there sexes are or if they will breed)
2 x yellow labs (1m 1f)
1 x blue acara
1 x eel
1 x freshwater clam
2 x apple snails
and some shrimp somewhere they are always hiding

clown loaches should be ok but not perfect
algea eaters are ok
blue acra is a new world cichlid and needs totally different water conditions
eel needs a meaty diet which can be fatal for labs and any other malawi cichlid
the clam, snalis and shrip will become a snack.

Bet you wished you had not asked now.
