I will be using sand as a substrate for my first tank i will be getting (10 gallon) and i was wondering, how would i make light play sand look dark, so my fish would have better colors and the environment would look more natural?

not alter the color, just put something over it that would make it look dark, is there anything like that that would help me?

get black sand, or dont turn the lights on  you can try to make some shade in your tank with slate, which will make that one spot of sand darker. or you can grow a carpet of java moss, and your sand will be so dark that you cant even see it

I am trying to say that i want my sand to look dark (possibly by putting somthing over it), even though it is naturally light. Because of all the dead leaves sinking to the bottom in the wild (and stuff like that), the bottom of their rivers looks dark, and it brings out beautiful colors in the fish

but isn't black sand sharp? im going to have some Corydoras and some Kuhli Loaches, so that wouldn't be good.

your bet going to your local LFS and buying some black aquarium sand...

either that or shop around for darker play sand...

it could also be silica sand....

just check before you buy...

just dont buy black beauty, as this isnt really sand. its iron slag and its sharp. you can try color quartz, ive heard this stuff is good, and it comes in many different colors
