i'm just trying to get a picture of the average size of common plecos kept in the hobby.
so the questions are:

how big and how old is your common?
how big, physical measurements not capacity, is your tank?

those of you who frequent many forums may see this question again. it is posted on many forum. as i said i am trying to gauge the average size of the fish kept in the hobby. and the more input the better.

I have 3 altogether.

The one in my 4ft tank ive had about a year. Hes grown from about 2" to about 4" now. That all happened a while ago, he doesnt seem to be getting any bigger now though.

I no longer have mine, because I gave him away to an lfs earlier this year--he was getting too big for me to keep. ;)

I got him from the brother of a friend of mine, who had been keeping him in a 10G tank for who knows how long; at that time he was about 5 inches long.

When I gave him away a few months ago, he was 10 inches long, 2 inches wide at the gills, and had been filling up my 38G tank--36" x 12" x 18". He might have been a couple of years old--I have no idea how long my friend's brother had him.

interesting Spooky, i have three and they were all 1and 1/2 inches 14 months ago. i now have 1 @ 8 inches and 2 @7. your critter dose not seem to be growing well. is there any chance that it may not be a Common? ahh i see you have an Orange spotted pleco, thank for the input by i was really looking for sizes of the Common.

Here is mine. I'm not quite sure if it is a Common Pleco or a Sailfin Pleco. The Pleco is about 1.5 years old now and is about 8 inches in length (20cm). It is in a 72gl community tank. The tank is a bowfront and the measurements are approx. 48" long, 12" width on the side, 20" wide through the center, 20" deep. Here is a pic. of the Pleco

I had 2 commons well one i think might be a sailfin. I gave away the smaller younger one to a friend of mine.

Currently mine is about 2 years old (a little less) and its at 10" long possibly bigger.

My last of my original crop of fish, I started with a bad experience and had many bouts of illness and ammonia and even in another tank poisoning fro man accident involving a room mate. And the bugger is still around. I made the beginner mistake of getting one, and I've upgraded my tanks just to accommodate him so I can keep him! :D

whilst not strictly a Common, though to be fair im not sure they are not, it is just what i am after

In my old 6'x2'x2' tank I had a Common Plec at 11.7 inches. (he was 4 years old).

At my localish Radyr Garden Centre (its a maidenhead) They temporarilly house large fish, there i have seen common plecs of 12" in large tanks.

Hope that helps

Hi, my Common (Liposarcus Pardalis) is 2 years old and measures approx 13" (including tail). He/she is kept in a 4ft long, 2 ft high, 18m inches wide tank with community fish. I am getting a 6 foot tank next year, although TBH I think he would be fine in his present tank.

Sorry for not very good pic!

how big and how old is your common? I have 4 of them, one is 6 years old and 16 inches long, another is adopted, I believe around 5 years old and 14 inches long. A 3rd is also adopted and is 10 inches long. The 4th was purchased and is around 3 years old and 5 inches long.
how big, physical measurements not capacity, is your tank? Well I'm too lazy to go measure them for you, so You'll have to be happy with the capacity. One is 55 gallons and houses two of them, another is 46 gallons and houses the two smallest ones. I am getting tired of seeing the poor buggers having so much diffiiculty cruising the tank and enjoying life, so I plan on upgrading to a 150 gallon tank soon, sometime this fall.
