My adult male guppies are about 1.5 inches, but they vary according to breed (some breeders like to breed for size, apparently). With mollies I have a 1.5" baby, a 2" mature female, a 2.5" mature female sailfin and the whopper of the tank, a 3" mature male sailfin molly. So, depending on the breed, they can reach a fair size. Those are sizes excluding tails, of course, so his actual size is nearer 4 inches!
Apparently their previous owner got rid of them because they were too big and aggressive for her tank. I think they're fantastic but then I do have an almost 4 ft tank.
