OK so I went into the fish shop that is closest to me today to have a quick look as I never use the place beacuse of the way that they house and look after the fish. First thing I saw was bettas in 5cmx5cm cube vase's that were kinda hidden on shelves and they had about 1cm of water that was really really dirty. The bettas looked ever so pretty that if I had the room I would have bought them all to get them out of that horrible place.
And then I saw these:

Poor things. The plec could only just turn around in there.
I know people say that they are only temporary but it's still not fair.
Hope the images work.

Complain, complain!Thats wrong, you can see how dirty the water is from the pics :(You posted 3 times :fun:

Yeh, you really should complain. That is horrible

Who should I complain to?
Already know that the bloke that owns the place is and a hole! Thats why I do not go there.

I don't know actually.Maybe someone can help you out there. There must be people who keep fish shops in order.

I would give local council a call, they could help or point you in the right direction and also environmental health as well ohhh and local rag.

Spoke to the rspca and they said that I needed to talk to the local council So I did. The rspca only get involved if the council ask them to. The bloke that deals with them is going to investigate it.

Good for you chick, that is so not on! There's temporary measures, then there's downright cruelty. I hope they get SERIOUSLY reprimanded for this.

Hate to be the neagtive cynic here, but the reality is, the council probably won't do anything about it.

A fish store near me is very similar to the one you are talking about, where mine had arowanas and stingrays in tiny tanks, probably no more than 10-15 gallons. I would imagine there's quite a few others around as well.

The council will probably just see them as fish, and not really care about it, after all fish can't show they're mistreatment like dogs and cats can.

By all means, go for it, and let's hope they make this guy sort out his shop, but don't be surprised if nothing happens

Again, sorry for being so negative, but that's just my view on things.

That's so sad :( The Petco near me (which is not the best) is even better than that. I hope something gets done :(

I recently complained to the council about the poor condition of fish in sale in a local lfs (only complained two days ago so not heard anything yet). I found a piece of legislation called the Pet Animals Act 1951, which pet shops have to adhere to to keep their licence. It's got info about stocking, but it there are no rules about size of tank/size of fish, only about ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels in the tank. Ammonia can't be higher than 0.2ppm, same for nitrite.
Anyway, the legislation may be of interest to you. I think it's the same for all local authorities. link
