Just tested my water with the API master test kit and the results were
Ammonia: 7ppm
Nitrate: 5ppm
Nitrite: 0.5ppm
PH: 7.4
i have a 48l tank with
2 Mollys
3 Guppies
1 Common Plec
1 Pakistani Loach
1 Zebra Danio

i know my tank is too small for the plec and i am cycling a 4ft tank for it.

its overstocked,i would be doing daily water changes on it,trying to reduce the Ammonia level

How often do you do water changes and what percentage of the water do you change..... Are you sure your test kit isn't wrong. And p.s you are overstocked

am i over stocked due to the plec because hes only 2" atm and by the time much more growth happens i should have my 4fter cycled

did a water change before testing, which was today and one about 5 days before that and about 25% a time

With those levels, you need to be changing A LOT more water A LOT more often. You need to make sure that your levels don't go above 0, certainly no more than 0.25. You are overstocked but that's okay if you're transferring them over to the bigger tank, but it does mean that your levels will rise much more quickly while they're in this tank, so you'll need to change often.

even without the Plec you are overstocked 48L would maybe home the Mollies..but thats about all.

Lots of water changes. Your way over stocked, and this is what is contributing to your high levels, If I was you Id:

- Remove the Plec
- Remove the Danios (Should be in groups 6 or more)
- Remove the Loaches (should be 3 Minimum and you do not have the space)
- Remove the Guppies Will need more swimming room
- Even the Mollies To be honest, they require at least 30" Tank space to be catered for aqequately

Im sorry mate but you will need to re-think your entire stocking and look at something like :

Corydoras pygmaeus - (Pygmy Cory) (arounnd 5-7 of these)
Hyphessobrycon amandae - (Ember Tetra) (6-8 of these)
Neocaridina denticulata sinesis - (Cherry Shrimp) (5-10 of these)

Make sure you only add these shrimp when your water is perfect and running
Amonia - 0 Nitrite - 0 Nitrate - 0 (Or as close to as possible)

In your position, I would ditch the (fishless?) cycling of the 4-foot, adding fresh dechlorinated water into it and then acclimitising all your fish to the fresh water. Transfer the 48l's filter across as well and then check the water for ammonia and nitrite levels at least daily if not twice daily (doing at least 50% water changes if either read 0.25mg/l).

Far too many fish in that 48l, not to mention a lack of numbers for fish that need groups, but you need to get your 4-foot and filtration stable (two weeks of no ammonia or nitrite) before starting to increase nmumbers gradually.

hmm...sounds like a good idea, ive had my external filter working on the 4ft tank for about 4 ~ 5 days now i know that isn't good enough but come tue/thurs ill do that suggestion of yours, hopefully no deaths

Hopefully you have done something for your fish since last night, they will have an awful short and long term prognosis in water containing 7ppm ammonia and 5ppm nitrite...

Have you done a massive water change on the 48l since Saturday night? The shock of exposing them straight to fresh dechlorinated water might be too much. I would net all the fish and place them in some of their current tank water in a fish safe bucket (~25% full); empty the 48l completely of water; refill with fresh dechlorinated water of a similar temp; acclimitise fish to new water as if brought home from fish store; top up tank with more fresh water (having netted fish out of old/new water mix once bucket is nearly full).

As for the 4-foot, have you been adding ammonia (~4 ppm) to it over the last 5 days, to start cycling the external filter?
