Hello all,

I was wondering how accurate you have to be when putting declorinator in the tank during a 25% water change. Although i am still in the early stages of cycling my tank. I am aware thast you will prbably kill off the bacteria in your media if it is'nt strong enough.

The problem is that i have a 295 L tank and i have took off 5L (290L) because off subsrate and stones and other things that are in the tank cos they will reduce volume. and i mixed intially 5ml of declorinator for evry 45 litres of tap (in accordance with instructions) so for my tank i put in 35ml of declorinator for max capacity. For 25% (72.5L) all i am going to put in is 10ml (rounded up).

Can i do this or does it have to be more accurate? I mabe looking into this a little much but i want to be sure.

Regards

As with most things you put in an aquarium (particularily medications) you should stick ridgidly to specified doseage

However declorinator is ok and some members add extra as a matter of course as it contains other benificial properties :good:

Thank you for your help. That has really put my mind to rest. All i have to do now is wait for my tank to finish cycling lol.

I NEVER measure dechlorinator. I just squirt it in and I'm sure I usually put in 4 to 5 times the prescribed dosage but I've never had a problem. There is an old thread where someone wrote to API and asked about over dosing Stress Coat (their dechlorinator) and they said it was impossible to OD.

I usually try to get the dosage fairly accurate, however, during the summer time I double-dose because they add more chlorine to the water supply. As I understand it, heat makes chlorine evaporate faster, so they have to add more to keep the bacteria in the water at safe levels. This summer has been particularly bad, I can smell the chlorine in the water. Thank God for water filters.

i use prime from seachem and the dose it 5ml to 200liters, though if i do a water change of eg %25 i use 2.5ml to 50 liters so i am doubling my dose and all fish have been very good and breeding for the past year :good:
