I wouldn't put ice in the water but i would consider putting ice on top of my filter so that the water is evenly cooled

in theory that's a good idea, I've thought of that one, but haven't done it because I'm scared of accidentally killing off my filter bacteria by freezing them. Does anyone know if this could happen??

also... is it better for fish to be at a constant (too hot) temparature, or is it better to try and keep the tank cool - though it is fluctuating a lot?

Oh yes... I forgot... If you have a spare area that is away from the media it might work though.

Personally I think a constant hot is better than constant fluctuations. Hot with gradual increases in decreases (over several hours) would be better I think.

but... what if you are like me and have no ice, because your housemates refuse to put 'human' food in the ice tray because that's where you keep your bloodworm and assorted seafood puffer fish nosh? *i'm just being difficult now you don't have to answer that *
