Hi All,

I have 4 goldfishes in a 190 litter tank. During the summer the temperature goes all the way up to 25-26 degrees.  I have tried to bring this down to 24-25 by having 4 computer 5volt fans blowing in the tank and closing other air holes so the cold air stays their to cool them down.

This attempts didn’t work well enough so next step was ice cubes in a bag which brings it down to 23ish or 22 at night time.

Failing all this to bring it down I switched the light off so they have no aquarium light at all during day or night which did help about 0.5 degree.

So my questions are:
1.    Does fish need aquarium light ? does it make them happy ?
2.    Will they go to sleep all day if the light is off ?
3.    Is 24ish degree really high for them ? I know people suggest it should be between 18-21 so way up the limit?
4.    Does temperature increases the likelihood of having a higher ammonia ? their ammonia was very high which has never been . there were no dead fish etc but regardless of even changing 50 % every 2 days still high . so I did put another filter in so I have 2x 1000 litters filter In there which did bring the ammonia down in 2 day right to 0.
Was that a tank recycling  issue or temperature in your view?

5.is the strong flow of 2000 litters per hour too much , will it stress them out ?

Sorry for lots of questions asked and appreciate the input

As far as the lights are concerned they'll be ok with them off as they'll have ambient room lighting during the day. It's only plants that need the light to survive and fish on their own can manage quite happily without the extra lights. They'd get seasonal fluctuations in the wild so they will adapt. The only thing with warmer water is there can be less dissolved air in the water so watch out for gasping at the surface. You can agitate the water more to increase the amount of dissolved air by adding an air-bar or stone.
Regarding the ammonia, was the tank cycled before you added fish or are you doing fish-in cycling? Do you use a dechlorinator? Have you done anything that would destroy established bacterial colony such as rinsing the filter media in tap-water rather than old tank water?

thanks for the reply. so take it they do not need any light and will still be as happy as they had the light.

re ammonia, I did wash their filters using their water as always do and squeeze it . I normally squeeze it hard to get all dirts out don't know if that was the cause .I do this everytime or most of the time so probably not the cause.

I do use tetra dechlorinator and also have the pond dechlonitar which does not have the slime coat thing but use it occasionally. it is for big ponds.
