I was surprised to read the hospital tank recommended size was 10gal, which is bigger than my tank. Can you not use a small tank if you only have small fish? How would you best work out the size needed?

I have a 5 gallon hospital tank. I would not hesitate to put up to a 3 inch fish in there, since it would only be 2-3 weeks at most that they need to be in there. So smaller tanks are fine as long as, like you said, you are dealing with small fish.

In the US 10 gallon tanks are the cheapest tank, due to being so common. You'll often see used 10 gallon tanks go for $1 at an auction, while 5's & 2.5's go for considerably more. They are cheaper new as well, large demand, large supply to meet this demand, price goes down on each unit produced.

I have a 20L tank which I can set up in a hurry at any time. :D

Thanks, silly question but are US gal the same as UK gal?

Nope, there is a slight difference. This is the reason I like to talk in litres as it is a universal measurement and is the same everywhere :D

I just try to remember the conversion for my own tank - 26US gal / 98 litres - and post both in my threads....
