Hi everyone,
So yesterday i added some tetra and a couple of cherry barbs to my main tank. While i had the lid off i noticed my male zebra danio had some of the symptoms of dropsy. No swelling just the raised scales. I raced to my LFS and purchased a 19L QT tank and some internal antibiotic. I used media from my main tanks filter in the Qt tanks filter added de-chlorinator to the water. I added the antibiotic and when the temp a stable moved him in. This morning he is at the bottom of the tank with rapid moving gills, is this likely to be a product of the water quality in the QT tank? Or a symptom of the disease? Any help would be greatly received.

Hopefully someone else more in the know will come along... in the meantime, can you add an air stone to increase the oxygenation of the water?

The pump has a snorkel fitted to aid aeration, although i did only add that this morning

Hello :)

Unfortunately dropsy is very hard to treat... I lost my beloved Betta fish (Oscar) to dropsy only a few weeks ago :-(

But here's a thread which has a little information about dropsy, it's the thread where I was asking people to help me treat Oscar, but it was too late :-(

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/407587-betta-with-dropsy/page__p__3429799__fromsearch__1#entry3429799 (I found the epson salt baths helped draw out some of the fluids, so he wasn't so swelled up)

Best of luck.

Just a quick update, i suspect this is an issue with pH my main tank has bogwood which i assume affects pH. My Qt tank was set up using new water. The reason i didn't use main tank water in my qt tank is that my main tank is under treatment for white spot, should i do a large water change with water from my main tank? At this point i think this difference in pH is going to kill him so what do i have to lose? Please advise

How many gallons is the main tank please?
How many fish and which type?
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
What is your tap reading in PH?
What the brand name of the antibiotic you are using?

If you are using antibiotics in an isolation tank adding a mature filter sponge won't help. As the antibiotic will wipe all the good bacteria out in your filter.
You can just run an air stone for aeration. Keep an eye on water stats. If you have to preform a water change during the medication course you just add the correct amount of medication back to water removed.

Raised scales can be due to dropsy, but also can be caused by lumps beneath the skin, parasites under the scales, injury that has caused the scales to raise.
Just check the fish to see if you can see any lumps, or parasites beneath the scales.
Also check the fish for an enlarged anus, or red inflamed anus.

Do you have a liquid test kit to check your water stats in the isolation tank?
