Went to feed my sons fish this morning & spotted a new swordie fry as I put the lights on. Looked for mum & saw she was still giving birth in the corner of the tank. Unfortunatly everyone else saw her as well & as the fry were being born they were all in competition to see who could eat them first. Specks my favourite mollie was the worst one shoving her way in to get a live breakfast. I have had to have serious words with her. (ha ha! not that she will take any notice of me) I reckon she is jealous as she has never had babies of her own, 2 males in tank with her but prefer each others company to hers.

ewwww....

*note to self....livebearers are disgusting*

 That really is just too gross, and if you hadn't seen it, you would have never known!

Hi specks :)

This is just nature's way and nothing to become alarmed about. :kana: Most fish will eat their own, or other fish's young or eggs.

Part of the reason why fish produce so many fry and/or eggs is to compensate for this loss.

I'll move your thread to the Livebearer's forum where you might get lots of information about the best way to save them, if this is what you want to do. :D

hey have u took the the fry out :dunno: ? how many did u catch :dunno: ?

good luck with the fry anyway.

No paige, I didnt take the fry out. We usually let them take their chances, I just wish I hadnt gone to feed them at that time. If I'd been going to work today I would have fed them earlier & been out of the house by then. I did take out the first lot of fry from that female & we ended up with 24, most of whom are still in the tank. If I took them all out we would be over run with them. The female gives birth approx every 5 weeks. When my son comes home tonight I am going to get him to put the male in my tank so "mum" can get some peace.

Really?!

If a betta eats his fry it is ok :p But a "baby guppy breakfast buffet" is unacceptable and I hope Speck's fish learned their lesson!

Lesson learned: next time be the first at the buffet for the best pickin's

EDIT~ This was in TCC, now I feel weird posting in this forum -_- It's foreign to me.
