I went into Petsmart today to inquire about the job application I put in some 3 weeks ago. So while I was there I decided to check out the beetas and I was horrified! I found 1 dead one last week when I was there, which, sad to say isn't too bad compared to most places. But today I found FIVE! FIVE dead bettas at the same time! I was awestruck. I demanded to see the manager and showed him the bettas. He told me that the water gets changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I told him it obviously didn't get changed yesterday and probably not even on Monday as all the water in the cups was horribly dirty and two of the five dead bettas water wasn't even blue anymore! I asked for the contact information of the corporate office so I could file a formal complaint. I felt so bad that I couldn't rescue any as I currently have no room and there was a great looking CT male, I can't imagine what he'd have looked like healthy. It upsets me so much to see these kinds of conditions in pet stores. The Petco by me is great, and the guy who works in the fish section really seems to know his stuff. Even the Petsmart in Binghamton, where I go to school, is a great store, the bettas water is always clean and the fish are always in great shape. I just don't understand how a company based on selling products for the care of pets could let something like this happen in their own store! I can say for certain though that I will likely never shop there again. I only hope that I do get hired there so that I can see to the care of these poor fish myself. :grr:

If the manager didn't hear me out at least the corporate office did! I just got a call from them and told them what I saw and they said that they would contact the district manager and that I should be expecting a call from him.

Yeah some of the petstores around here have been or are getting pretty bad.

The Petsmart we go to has been getting alot better. I think it just depends who is working. The last 3 or 4 times we went, there was a young man there working, and every single time he was cleaning out the tanks.
But other times, when it's been this older lady working, all of the fish look aweful and there are usually multiple bettas dead or close to death.

Then there is the Superpets near us. I only go there to get emergency fish meds. They were aweful when we first started going there. I mean just AWEFUL. Dead fish everywhere, dead animals everywhere. I don't know how they stayed in business. We went there once, and looked into a couple of containers that was supposed to have frogs in them. Well they did have frogs, but NM that they were dead and maggoty. Yeah.. that's right.. MAGGOTY. One had been dead for so long that there was nothing left but a tiny little skeleton.
The employees there better have been glad that none of them were around b/c I was going to explode at someone. My fiance had to drag me out before I did... that just made me SO upset and disgusted.
Anyways.... they got better.... but everything has gone to crap there again. Their fish tanks are truly a pathetic site to see. Over half the fish in most of them are dead or dying and the ones that are ok look aweful.
Either the place they're getting their fish from are crap, or more likely they just don't give a damn.
You just feel so bad b/c you want to save them, but you can't

I want to work in a petstore, but then I don't.
I do b/c I think I could help inform people about proper fish care.
But then I don't b/c of the stupid ignorant customers that come in and don't give a crap, but you have to sell to them anyway.
I just don't think I'd be able to handle those types.

Good job with calling up the corprat, thats the only way to get things done any more with any bussnes.
good job! :good: and also hopefully u can take care of em' beter if u get hired hope u get the job!

thats the way it is. sounds sad...sounds bad.. but thats real.

I HATE to see abused animals; whether fish or whatever. Petco by my house is terrible with the care of their bettas. I come by almost everyday to find multiple abused bettas.

theres a place called Pet O Rama by my house that claims to be known for their "obsessive care" of their animals when in reality; in the dog area... theres Feces all over the walls!!! its disgusting!!! the cups that store the bettas... BARELY HAVE ANY WaTER!!! their fins are actually STICKIN OUTTA THE WATER!!! The betta I currentl have... I rescued from that place. Been Homeboys since...

I applied for Dallas North Aquarium because they specialize in fish care. but... I really want to be where the need is greater... like at that Pet O Rama place. I can work hard!

Its about the oppisite to me as our petsmart is good and are local petco just sucksss. All there fish are discolored and skinny and 50% of there fish are covered in ick and then there healthy ones have stickers saying " Fish under observation" I guess so they can say some of them are healthy. its always different in other places.
