I went into Petsmart today to inquire about the job application I put in some 3 weeks ago. So while I was there I decided to check out the beetas and I was horrified! I found 1 dead one last week when I was there, which, sad to say isn't too bad compared to most places. But today I found FIVE! FIVE dead bettas at the same time! I was awestruck. I demanded to see the manager and showed him the bettas. He told me that the water gets changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I told him it obviously didn't get changed yesterday and probably not even on Monday as all the water in the cups was horribly dirty and two of the five dead bettas water wasn't even blue anymore! I asked for the contact information of the corporate office so I could file a formal complaint. I felt so bad that I couldn't rescue any as I currently have no room and there was a great looking CT male, I can't imagine what he'd have looked like healthy. It upsets me so much to see these kinds of conditions in pet stores. The Petco by me is great, and the guy who works in the fish section really seems to know his stuff. Even the Petsmart in Binghamton, where I go to school, is a great store, the bettas water is always clean and the fish are always in great shape. I just don't understand how a company based on selling products for the care of pets could let something like this happen in their own store! I can say for certain though that I will likely never shop there again. I only hope that I do get hired there so that I can see to the care of these poor fish myself.
