Hi

Does anyone know of a site/importer who may have a True parrot, I cannot find in any of my LFS!!!!

Oh so do I, just gorgous arnt they!! try here these shops show them in stock, best ring first though.

You may have to have one sent to you though. Good luck :good:

Are you in the uk?if your in the USA I got mine wild caught from wet spot in Portland OR. They are neat fish and rather peacful yet can stand up to bullies. When young the color is drab as they grow they color up well. Depending on what part of the river they come from one type is brighter.

Brill thanks for your help guys and girls!

I am in north London so the Hillingdon Maidenhead aquatics is only a 45 minute drive, will give them a call and hopefully go see on the weekend!!!

It's so hard to find info about them, I know they get 10-13 inches and need high quality water but can't find too much info on tank mates

I was hoping to put in with a chocolate anyone think that would be a bad idea?

A choc would seem like a perfect tankmate.

Snowflake311 has an H.psittacus in with Sevs, blue acara, uaru. All very successfully I believe.

Should be ok with a choccy, although they get big they are suppose to be very peaceful and can mix with most sa/ca cichlids, not overly aggressive but will have a go back if challanged. This is only what I have found out not from personal experience. Hope you get one :good:

 Hamfist you must type faster than me

I am getting excited now!!!

Does anyone have a good website with like a profile for them, can't find a decent one anywhere, just really wanna make sure i have space and the right water parameters before introducing one of these beauties!

Why not pm snowflake, they have one and I am sure they wouldnt mind giving you all the info they can.

Was googling and found this though warning its absolutely gorgous blue variety of the parrot

They come from the amazon and are found with discus among the roots of trees. They need water like the discus warm 76-84F they have a big mouth and can do some damage. Yes they get big 10-13" is about right. Chocolates are very simular to the true parrot it could be a match made in heaven or they could fight like crazy. My parrot hated my green severum for the longest time I could not keep them together. They were the same size and color. Now the tank is over stocked and my uaru rule the tank and keep the peace. So the severum and parrot just keep away from eachother but don't fight.

There are so many types of fish that can live with them. They are like severums in temperment so any fish a severum can live with so can the parrot. Then again they are cichlids and some times they just don't get along. Mine eater everything he loves food.

They can get HITH very easy so do not let the nirtates get over 15-20ppm. These guys have so many sensory pits it's scary look closely at the head see all the sensory pits?

What size tank do you have? 100 gal in the smallest tank you should keep them in. I will need a larger tank if I'm going to keep mine for life. What's your water like my ph is 7.0-7.4 they do best in soft water like discus but are hardy and can adjust I would not keep them in water ph 8 or hard water at all.

These guys are strong but shy fish. Tank mates that have worked for me are
severum- not perfect but they deal
ebjd- they get along well my ebjd trys to be the boss and my parrot looks at hum like he is crazy.
blue acara- great tank mate for him because they are a big smaller
uaru- good but bossy mine uaur are bigger and push my parrot around during feeding time.
Pictus cats- great tank mates for larger cichlids but due to water temp might not be a good idea.
Plecos- who does not get along with plecos
tetras- my parrot tends to leave smaller fish alone right now since he is only 5"

I know geos are good tank mates for them too.

If you want more info talk to people that have kept them. Go to MFK and do a search for them and read up on what other said.

If you have any question you can ask me.

Here is another photo of my beauty. He is on the move. When he shows these marking it ment he was feeling like the king. Now he is no longer top fish he stays a more solid green color.

don't mind the little cut on his lip him and the ebjd had a little lip lock fight.

They come from 2 area I forget what one is what but the blues are from one and the more green are from another. As they get older they get more color. You will not find a parrot under 7" with blue like that.

Thanks for all the info Snowflake!!!

I have a similar size tank to yourself,it is roughly 105gal, lightly planted with 2 externals and a internal u4..... I know to keep for life I would need to upgrade and I do intend to, keeping my eyes peeled for a bargain!!

I have 1 chocolate cichlid (what a baby he is nearly twice the size of my BA and runs scared whenever he is challenged!)
1 BA
3 FM's (Would rehome if/when neccessary)
1 Convict (He/she roles with my BA and has territory wars with my FM's no guessing who wins)
1 blood parrot (Slap my wrist, again may be rehomed if neccessary)
Also have a couple of BN's and a Snowball plec
5 TB's
And finally a jaguar cat

I will check my nitrates but if they are ok, do you think I would be good to go?

What is your ph and temp? Keeping the tank warm is key. You have most CA cichlids.I'm not a fan of mixing ca with sa but it can work. The parrot would out grow all thoes fish and would
rule the tank like unsaid these guys are strong and can hold thier own with bullies. True parrots are not cheap you know. Over here they can range from $30-$100 for one fish. So I would try and make the tank all about the parrot. So be ready to move fish around if you have to.

It could work for now depending on what size fish you get and what size your fish are now.

The way to keep your nitrates down is just with extra wc unless you have some in your tap that could be a problem.
