Hood And Cabinet

I bought a hood for my tank from aquatics-online.co.uk, it was only a cheap one and doesn't look the best but does the trick!

Have you had a look on ebay at all?

Well, in my experience, even the stands for 30-55g tanks run upwards of $200 from LFS, and are generally made of a particle-board like "wood". They'll hold the tank they're made for, of course.

That being said, the materials to build a stand out of 2x4s would cost you no more than $150, unless you use Oak or other likewise expensive wood. A single 2x4 can withstand 1000lbs of compression force, so a properly made DIY stand will definetly hold a 5'x2'x2' tank.

2x4 refers to 2" by 4" lumber, used in most home construction. Check out http://garf.org/ scroll down the left hand side to the diy section. There is a program that will give you a cut list & instructions on building your own stand. It isn't that difficult, many members here besides myself have used that program for stand building.

You will have a sturdier stand than anything I have ever seen commercially built in any lfs. Many pre-built stands on the market are underbuilt, especially the particle board ones. Totally avoid particle board, it slowly dissolves if & when it gets wet.
