My lfs has some Sparkling Gouramis (which I didn't bother to get on my knees to see--they were sooo ugly; I have since read some more on them and their color changes when adapted) and two cute little Honeys about an inch and a half. I have a cockatoo colony in a 100 usg tetra tank with peacefull bottom neighbors. Can I put these three together? If I happen to get two male Honeys or two male Sparklers will they find room for one another in a 60" tank?

If I get a yes I'm off to the lfs in the morning.

 they do in my tank :) , as long as surface agitation isn't too great , I think they'll work well together ................and they love plants , esp sparklers :D

Ugly?!?!?!

He says 'I'm a purty boy!'

I have a colony of 10 in a 10gallon tank, so I reckon 2 in a 5 footer will do fine. I doubt they'll be able to find each other! Even if they do get agressive, all they do is some flaring and posturing and tail flapping. They do like plants though!

HTH

Jollysue may have seen female croaker mislabaled as a sparkler , never saw a sparkler I didn't like :) yours is pretty

I will take the scientific name when I go just to make sure. Although I've certainly seen that they are often mistaken or mislabeled on the scientific name too. The site lucky 62 sent me to also seemed to have some confusion about croakers and sparklers. Some things I read in the posts YOU (finger pointing at lucky62) sent me to, said that sparklers may be bland until they get settled in a happy home. Then they begin to show.

I do have surface agitation with two Emperor 400 and a large air pump pumping air bubbles the length of the tank. I can move the the air screen and stone without upsetting the cockatoo plans I think. I have to plant the Amazon Sword mother plant anyway. She is now floating in her planter she came in.

Lots of activity going on there with the cockatoos. He was almost black with orange tail fins today chasing Dark Girl. Meanwhile The Lady was cruising in a pretty high yellow trying to get his attention. :p

Yes, SarahBravo, very purty boy.

Sad Day:
I will try to make it this morning again (Wed.) But it may have to wait until Thursday morn. I came home Tuesday morning to find 6 of my 10 little flock of minature hachets dead. When I got up tonight I could only see one. I got the tank at the last minute. I thought it was cycled. I used it. I may have used wrong judgement.

Everyone in my other two quarantine tanks seems to be doing well. I lost one oto--possibly to constipation. I'm watching the other seven for parasites. The BN seem to be doing well, too.

I'm tempted to put the remaining hatchet in one of the other tanks, if it's still alive in the morning, but I don't want to endanger the other tanks. The Marthae Silvers were the reason I ordered online. I've never seen them anyplace else here. Maybe my lfs can order them for me. :-( :stupid: :stupid: :stupid: :rip: :byebye: :dunno:

I want to get sparklers for one of my tanks too. I've seen them at 2 shops. In one of the shops they only had 3-4 left and only 1 looked healthy. In the other shop one had a wound on its side and it didnt look good. The next week I was in it was dead :/

Mind you it's summer here so things are quite slow..not many shops ordering in new fish. Hopefully it'll pick up again soon and I'll be able to find my sparklers. If not I'll have my lfs order me in some :D

What is your fish Elisabeth83?

My lfs always says they will order for no additional charge. What's the drawback?

I keep picturing the little Honeys, though. They were cuties. Like little puppys in the window.

They were indeed a honey yellow, with interesting expressive faces.

I remember telling a teenage boy at work that my Orange Oranda has a pretty face. He almost yelled at me, "Fish don't have faces! ("You stupid woman" was unspoken.) :/

When SarahBravo and lucky62 say that the love plants, does that mean to hide in or to chew? They will love my new Amazon Sword. The Gent and Lady do. I am watching for some low cover plants. They had some moss--the hairy kind that will grow on logs.

Well, one Honey was gone. I took the other one. More will be in next week, he said.
I also got three juvie Sparklers.

So I have 3 Sparklers and 1 Honey.
I put them in with the otos. That is the better established tank.

I also got 6 diamond head neons to enlarge my shoal of neons. :D
The diamond heads actually cost more than the gourami.

There is a large cave and a couple of large artificial plants, along with some established driftwood. Also a branch of the Amazon Sword. This is temprary, of course.

To swim about in, not to chew. :D

My juvie honeys love to chew! They seem to prefer the wisteria though, which is fine cos it's temporary.
:p

I've tried giving them lettuce and peas - both of which they kinda nibble at and go off looking for something else to eat.
:dunno:

 :p , sometimes information about fish can be confusing , misleading even , sparklers are also referred to as dwarf pygmy croakers [ or something like that ]. Either way they're nice fish , I think you'll be pleased with them :D

I like the Honey very much.

I can see hints of turqoise/green spots (?) or streaks on the body and hint of red (?) on the fringe of the tail fins on the 2 largest Sparklers. The smallest is only a sliver.

The Honey is paler yellow at the nose darkening to honey yellow until the fringes of the fins are orange.

No one knows how to sex either of them. Although the girl that showed me how to sex the cockatoos says there have been some very light Honeys that she has assumed are females.

I read that the male Sparklers get a row of spots aboves the lateral line. I can't see that on these yet.

Did you see what my cockatoo is doing? Running around almost black with orange fins trying to corner Dark Girl. Meanwhile jilting Lady as she fans her tail in high yellow at him. He'll come over start to follow her, then turn and start his search for Dark Girl again. My Gent has turned into Mr. Hyde.

Sue, I read on some of the other threads that the female honeys are paler than the males. The males will eventually go black on their front lower half so they look two toned and the females develop dark spots across their lateral line.

With the females spots, I was told that this would only really show when they were ready to breed. However of my three juvies, one of them has the spots just now so that's either wrong, or she's a horny lil fishy!
