I have one honey gourami and his color went from yellow (honey) at the lfs to a brownish color. I guess he is unhappy, and he barely eats. I read that if u get them friends that are either honey gouramis or sometimes even tetra, they will swim together and they get thier color back. So should i go out and get another honey or not? How do i tell whats a male and female? Please help me!!!

males have more colour females are yellow-brown,they are one of the more timid/shy gourami should only keep them really with quiet peaceful fish whats his tanks mates?

well im redoing my tank so i am adding all new fish, he will be with tetras and stuff. R u saying i have a female? If so, should i go get a male? I went to the store and when i bought "her" she wasnt brown, or i wouldnt have bought her, she was golden... im so confused, what do i do?

Yes, I think you should get another honey gourami for company.
If you are unsure whether yours is male or female have a look at the honeys on this site........................ http://www.heathland.net/Tropical/Anabantids.htm
The male is at the top with a yellow dorsal fin and black/blue belly and the female is lighter with a stripe, bear in mind that they are more likely to be this colour when breeding, so yours may not resemble them entirely.
If you still aren’t sure try to post a picture of yours.

yes i would get another 1 if in doubt as to the sex of urs at the mo get a female i had 2 nasty male 2 spots together once and they would spend all there time chasing each other untill 1 was stronger but honeys maybee different

ok ill go get a dull looking one tomorrow, even tho mine looks dull, but i will get one, i mean i guess two female wouldnt hurt, but i dont mind the breeding, i just want them to be colorful and happy, i got new fish, little tetras in the tank today, so i will see what happens, and may be if i am lucky, because i hear dbefore tetra make them more colorful (i guess thye get along really well) i will see if it is true :)

Hi Ani,
when you cant decide if its a male or female by their colour, then you have to look at the anal fins. The female's is rounded and the male's has a point to it. Its only with the standard dwarf and neonblue dwarf that the male's colours are bright blue and the female's are silver brown/grey.
You can enhance all fishes colours by having the adequate light and the special fluro tubes, also you can give them Betta flakes to enhance colour.
Cheers Davejey :)
