Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Can you get some pictures of the entire fish where the dorsal fin isn't turned away from the camera?

Earth calling @Wills, come in Wills. Wills is our Central South American cichlid specialist and might be able to shed some light on this.

Thanks Colin 😄

I agree looks like a female with rounded fins and the face looks female - males are a bit more square. But I’ve never seen these markings before? Have they always had that black blotch or do they ever get the stripes?

Interesting fish. Probably a young female, but I agree with @Wills that the blotch looks odd. I bred red points for a couple of generations (as easy as convicts), so I just went back into my old photo files to confirm. None of my shots have that blotch.

Reminds me of the patterning on something like a Panamesis but never seen a blue one before.

I don't know Central American Cichlids well. When I get home later I'll hit the books and try to figure it out. I have an excellent one by a British CA Cichlid guy, but I don't know if I've unpacked that box yet...

Slightly off topic but I thought ide ask for my own curiosity,

Can any point out the difference between a Sajica and a HRP?

Pretty different fish IMO the Sajica has a T marking on the sides and has a blue base but with lots of golds and oranges. HRPs are a blue base with black stripes and red tails and fins.

This particular hrp never shows stripes only the dark bloches. When it's color changes it just goes from more blue to less blue. Splotches stay the same. I will take more pics when I get home. Thanks for the replies

After that picture the hrp just looks like a slightly different convict

The original convict species got split into four species a few years ago hrps are a specific species and there is a purply one and the original can’t remember the fourth but think it’s been based on location and colour morphs and usually things like fin spine and scale counts. But also genetically specific species.
