Hey guys I have been making some homeade sponge filters, maturing them in a running tank, and selling them for 10 dollars each. You can make them too with some really simple household and aquarium products, and about 10 minutes of your time.
You will need:
Polyester Filter Fiber
This fiber is likely available at your local fish store. I got some more today. It resembles a massive wad of cotton balls.
Also you need exactly 1 Airstone, 1 airline tube, 1 air pump, 1 large tube (about 1.5 inches in diameter or more, 1 well cleaned cup from the cabinet, and a handful of clean gravel.
Step 1:
Insert a chunk of polyester filter fiber at the very bottom, and firmly pat it down into the cup. Then insert the airstone with the airlining tube and insert the airstone at the bottom of the large tube like shown, and firmly press the large tube down on the airstone.
Step 2:
While still holding the large tube down, fill the cup with gravel nearly to the top like shown.
Step 3:
Put one more slice of polyester pad on the top, change it as needed, and your done.
P.s. The bottom pad isn't necessary. If you use a bottom pad, you will need to change it once in a while or it will gunk the system up. The top pad however catches the food particles, the bottom pad is some extra biological media. The gravel is mainly surface area for bacteria to grow and the airstone sucks water down and out of the system, making water flow through the gravel. Enjoy!
