I'm going on holiday for 8 days next week and was wondering which is the reccomended technique for looking after my fish, i had 60 guppy fry last time i went away and a friend killed 50 of them when he looked after my pride and joy's. this time i have prepared a white chalky block which disolves and a gel concoction which is similar but with less toxic effects. both i have trialed in the take and the fish do eat them. would this be ok?

sorry the food will last about five days so fish will be without food for three days..

don't bother with feeding blocks, for 8 days your fish will be perfectly fine without food.

the thing you need to worry about is your water condition, if something untoward happens (a fish dies or something pollutes the tank) then you are not around to notice, the water can get really fouled up and this could easily kill off your fish

if no food is going into the tank then virtually no waste will be produced, thus stopping the water quality from deteriorating

the day before you go don't give them any food and do a large water change, then just leave the tank as it is and everything should be fine when you come back

well just doing the cleanup, and already planned the water change for monday, i have one sailfin molly fry about a week old will he be fine too? he is in the main tank in a breeder net.

ummm not sure about fry, best to ask in the livebearer section

adult size community trops will be fine though and it's best for them to be without food than risk beign overfed by someone else and then it causes chaos in the tank

btw how did your friend manage to kill your last fish? If by overfeeding, this could have been easily avoided by measuring small food portions out in a compartmented pill box and hiding all other food. My 11-year-old neighbour looks after my fish and there isn't much wrong he can do (being too young and responsible to pour beer in the tank or anything silly like that).

Not too sure the water wasn't too bad but had an infection in the tank weather or not i would have noticed in time is unknown. don't think it was overfeeding. just wanted a different option as he did feel bad about it..
