Holiday Food

We are off on holiday for a week shortly and I do not really want to have to arrange for someone to come in and feed the fish. I have bought something called Tetra Min weekend - Food sticks for all tropical fish. I have decided to do a trial week to see how it goes. Last night I put 3 ' sticks' in the tank but they do not seem to have attracted any interest yet apart from the small snails !

Has anyone tried this type of product? Is it ok? The box states that the food is 'released gradually over a period of several days ensuring your fish do not become hungry'. How exactly is it released? I haven't seen any action yet.

Also, on the same subject, is it necessary for the strip light to be left on or will the fish be ok without it?

Don't bother with it. Just give them a good spring clean and a decent feeding the week before you go away (Still, don't overfeed), then nothing. They'll be fine for a week or even more.

The lighting depends on whether you have plants as you don't need lighting.. that's just for us to see them. A timer can be bought from Asda or wherever though for a few pounds if needed.

Those weekend feeders do more harm than good. When they dissolve they release minerals into your water can can really foul things up. Fish are cold blooded, therefore they do not need as much food as we think they do and they can easily go for 2 weeks without feeding and be just fine.

Agreed, I think fish can go up to 3 weeks and be ok without food. A more expensive option If your worried is an auto feeder.
