Hi,

I have an aquarium, which was previously used as a terrarium, which has some 3mm diameter holes on the top cover. It has some but not a lot of holes.

I am wondering if this is ok for an aquarium that will harbor tropical fish. My worry is obviously if these holes cause enough cold air to come in to disrupt the whole eco-system inside the aquarium.

Cheers,

Paulo Matos

I don't think you need to worry about that. How do you think open topped fish tanks work? :) The only time I can foresee this to be a problem is if you have a power cut, in which case you would need to wrap the tank in blankets anyway.

I, myself would be more worried about getting adequate lighting through the top. If there aren't very many holes it may not be suitable for a tank lid for fish.

An open top is OK for some fish but there are lots of fish that are notorious jumpers. The end result is that the top with holes in it may or may not be suitable for your fish.

Holes are only 3mm diameter. Nothing can jump out of those except tiny fry!
