A little background on these guys. Please do not tell me that my ammonia level is off, or remind me that the tank is not cycled.

I bought this tank from someone who really cared about these fish, but did not know proper care. They have been with me for 2 days. I am trying to get them healthy and keep them that way so that I can rehome them. Or move them to my big tank. So think of this as a hospital tank situation. The previous owner had them about 6 months, removing and changing the filter cartridge every month. I do not think these guys have ever been in a cycled tank. I think that because of this they are suffering from HITH disease. How do I get them healthy again? I am doing water changes as often as I can, sometimes two (i did two yesterday) to keep the nitrites down, but unfortunately, there will always be ammonia bcause my tap water sucks. I cannot afford to go the RO route and buying that much bottled water everyday is expensive. I do not want to use ammo-lock because if I do, the tank will never cycle. What can i do?????

I would do the water changes everyday things and soak the pellets in vitamins.

I am doing water changes daily. The ammonia is steady at .25 until the water change then it jumps to between 0.5 and 1ppm. It is quickly depleted but I am keeping nitrites at 0. Had a few small spike to 0.25 but I am taking care of that. I am also siphoning all poo out of the tank, which is extremely easy because I left the tank bottom bare.

Im not sure if any of those chemicals treat HITH.

I'm not treating it yet. I need to pick up meds for it possibly. I am trying to get the cycle sorted first though. which its on its way because it is keeping up with the ammonia produced by these monsters...now I am having nitrite issue so hopefully before the week is out I will have that sorted. Once the water is in tip top shape, there is a good chance the HITH will heal on its own. At least that is what I was told in chat.

I am currently fighting my first case of HITH. I had oscars for years and never saw this disease. I do regular routine maintenance and my water parameters are great and I have never used carbon in my filter for this tank, but my black angelfish has come down with it. Over the last couple months, I was a little lax on maintenance, due to illness, but my water stats were still good. I did switch food about two months ago. I had someone else pick the food up for me since I was sick and the store was out of my brand so the person I had pick it up bought the biggest, cheapest can he could buy. At this point, I'd say it was the food. I bought a good food and have done daily water changes and he is starting to look much better, but as soon as the meds come in, I'm going to treat it too. Hopefully he will make a full recovery. Good luck to you with the oscars.

Thank you Colleen. I hope the fact that they are in my hands and that I have a good take on how to properly care for fish will allow for a good recovery for these guys. The only problem right now is the fact that the tank is uncycled, and that these poor guys have never been in a cycled tank. I am determined to have these guys in excellent condition. I hope that determination is enough :)

Hope all goes well for both of you and Dieses dont forget to go on chat today!
