I'm new here, Rather than posting a short intro then rushing off to emergency I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone (plus this is hardly an emergency).

Lets jump in at the deep end. I have a glass catfish who refuses to die.

On three separate occasions I've bought more glass catfish for him as I'm aware they are supposed to be kept in small groups. Each time the new catfish die after a couple of months leaving my original catfish alone again. I promise myself I wont waste any more money on them but after a week or two of seeing the lonesome catfish my concious gets the better of me and I find myself once again in the pet store with a bag of glass catfish. This time however I decided to stock up on a few other fish as my tank is somewhat empty. 4 endler guppies and 2 normal female guppies.

For the last few days I have noticed all the new fish are sticking relatively close to the surface. This is odd as the glass catfish I have introduced to the tank in the past usually join the old one in his regular position on the bottom next to the heater. I'd usually think this was due to a lack oxygen buy my original fish are acting perfectly normal, the new fish also don't seem gasping for air or appear to be in any way stressed. I'm honestly stumped!

perhaps they are just shoaling at the top with the guppies?

Any thoughts/ideas are more than welcome.

:hi: to the forum.

It's impossible for us to help you without more information on your tank.

How big is your tank, how long has it been set up and is it 'cycled'? How do you clean your filter, how often do you do water changes and have you tested your water at all? Can you also list all the fish currently in the tank, please :)

48l It's been set up for almost 2 years and I have done regular water changes lately. The water tests are all fine. Pet shops have also confirmed there is no issues with the water.

6 rummy nose, freshwater shrimp, 2 kuli loach, 4 glass catfish, 4 young endlers, 2 female guppies (adding more to bring up male:female ratio tonight)

As for the cleaning of the filter, I'm not using bleach if that's what you mean.

How large are the water changes you're doing? Actual numbers from the tests would be good (get the pet shop to tell you and write them down ;) ), as I've heard shops say the levels are 'fine' when they're actually at a level that can definitely harm fish.

That's quite a lot of stock in a fairly small tank, tbh.

I only asked about the filter as some people scrub the media under the tap, destroying the beneficial bacteria, or replace the media at regular intervals, also getting rid of the bacterial colonies; I had to ask!
