As some of u are aware I had to seperate my male from my main tank and put him into a 4gallon as the girls were being bullies

Now ive been told its not really possible to divide my main tank because of the girls, sooo how about dividing my 4gallon, so 2gallons each side of the divide and getting another male?

Any advice and opinions greatly appreciated :good:

males and females can't live together they only go together for breeding, but at least you learnt that without loosing any fish!

I think 2 gallons is the minimum you'd want a fish in, so I'd say go for it :) unless you want another tank ;)

yeah i found this out after i added my females with my male lol, the lfs gave me the wrong info

sooo it can be done :hyper:

If i was you I'd print out some of the replies regarding puting the male in with females and take them into your LFS as they are still going to be giving this information to everyone else.

good idea, but some LFS let it all go in one ear and out the other, it's a shame.....worth a try though! :good:

i had a winge at them, n tbh the response was like ohhhh, not actually bothered but hey all we can do is try and tell them

But when im bk at home on tues i will print off some replies and take it down to my lfs and see if they can adopt a new attitude :good:

with dividing my 4gallon in half, would it be better to try and make the divider so as the 2 males cannot see each other?

I'd be curious to know about dividers, as well. I was thinking about dividing my 10 gal but the only dividers I've seen are mesh...which means my males would probably die of stress from trying to kill eachother

Virtually all dividers have a degree of "see throughness"! The males will prob flare for a while, but they do settle down. We have 2 divided tanks. One divided in two and the other in three. The problem with solid dividers is that the filter may only filter one side, unless you have one either side or do very frequent water changes. The other problem is whether the heat will transfer from one side to the other?
This is a pic of one

the heater i have stretches the length of the tank, so i can always make a little cut out for it to fit ( the divider that is)

also i gave up on filtering my 4gallon as dave doesnt like it lol

so dividing it half and half 2 gallons each, i will just do frequent water changes

would this be ok?

Doing regular water changes is fine. Be careful about the heater though, most heaters have the heating element at one end and the thermostat at the other. This could result in the thermostat not cutting out until the temp on that side was high enough, but the temp on the other side may be quite a lot higher. Depends on what divider is made of, but any solid divider is going to slow down the transfer of heat.

Oi  Sounds like a lot of problems lol I have a wire mesh divider for a 10 gal that I used when I had Pacman frogs...it's very see-through, though. You're saying they will settle down after showing off for awhile? I'm guessing you couldn't cover the divider with plants, huh? Wouldn't help much with filtration, I suppose...

Sorry for kinda taking over your thread :look:

Hi, this is Bronzecat on Nettys sign in.

Plants against the divider will be fine. I try and get plants there myself. I cant remember who, but there is someone on the forum who has clear dividers and their bettas are fine.

Here's what I did to solve this problem... I made the mesh dividers as usual, but I used aquarium silicone around the edges and glued black fiberglass screening on each side of the mesh. This makes it even harder to see through, but water can still flow.
