Hey,
well i was thinking of getting my mum a 28 litre ( about 7 gallons) for a betta because she has always wanted one...i was wondering if anything else would be able to go in there like bottom dwellers. I know it is a really small tank, but my mum only really wants a betta as a centre piece but i think she she get something for the bottom

So what do you think??

edit- just realised the tank i was looking at has an undergravel filter -.- hadn't looked at that part so scratch that tank size, what size tank would be suitable for what i am after?

I think the aquarium is incompatible for any bottom dwelling fish. Small plecs and hillstream loaches all prefer fast flowing water, and cooler temps than the fighter will like. It's just too small really for cories, you could do 1/2 panda cories, but they won't be happy because they are a shoaling species.

In something that small, really the only tankmates would be 2/3 male endlers or 6 microrasbora species or celestial pearl danios.

Depending upon the temperament of the fighter, you could go with cherry shrimp, but the fighter might treat them as a mid-morning snack.

hmm i would upsize, i was just asking about that one because it was a farley good price.
I have panda's in my other tank so i wasn't really looking at them, what size tank would i need for something else?

What about a couple of snails? I really like the look of Inga snails. They have cute little antenaes and they are speedy little snails. Look a lot like mystery snails

never really thought about them, only problem is that none of my LFS's have any snails other then the mystery snails ( and of course the annoying pest snail which i know too well about)
I would have to find a good online store that ships to australia

Hehe i would throw away pretty much everything else that comes with it though even without all of that it is a great price

Higher tanks can sometimes be a problem, especially if a betta gets sicks. They need to be able to get to the surface for air, so if the tank is too high, and they are under the weather, getting air can be a problem.

But the tank in the picture wouldn't be a problem. With a tank like that you can easily lower the water level.
I just wouldn't go with a tall hex or anything like that.

edit- WEEELLL my mum doesn't want it LOL she just wants a bowl we were looking at with a betta in it by itself- the bowl is about 20L i think but i would have to check- so i am trying to compromise and get her a 20L square/rectangle tank because it is easier to filter, light and heat
Would that be big enough still if i had it well planted??

Sure thing, 20l is fine with a betta, 2 snails, and some shrimp - that's what my bettas live in and share housing with. The shrimp must have spots to hide though

Dwarf shrimp would be seen as a snack yes, but larger shrimp like amanos would be suitable. You could do a betta with 2-3 shrimp, that would be lovely (there's several members who have setups like that).

thank you both but i am not sure if we have any shrimp in australia other then cherry's so i could just have the betta and some snails
Hmm nother silly question how do i heat a fish bowl?? i know how to filter( sponge?? ) and light (lamp or something??) but how would i heat?

edit- i found a site that could ship some glass shrimp... are they much bigger?
