despite the Ph of my tap being roughly 7.4 and having a large chunck of drift wood in my tank, my readings for the tanks Ph still rise to roughly 8.3

Just wondering if its worth the hassle trying to lower it with the drops that are out there, or if I shouldnt worry about it. Should i just stock accordingly? (cichlids and livebearers?) It seems like most everything out there thats easily obtainable likes lower Ph.

feedback is much appreciated!

I'd be against trying to change your pH. The water will always try to bounce back to its natural pH, and a stable pH is more important to fish than a "correct" one.

yeah thats what i was always told too. Both about cichlids and the fact that having a stable Ph is more important that an 'ideal' for a certain fish.

alright, guess i leave it alone then.

thanks all!

Have you tried letting some dechlorinated tap water settle for 24 hours or so in a bucket and then testing it, just to be sure nothing in your tank is having a big influence on the pH? The rise from 7.4 immediately from teh tap to 8.3 could well be down to carbon dioxide being in the tap water, which will artificially acidify the water.

If 8.3 is true, that is good water for Malawi, Tanganyika or some Central American fish.
