No beer or chocolate this time, just a quick question  My tap water Ph is 7.6 The tank after 5 days starting a cycle is 8.4 Is this too high ? Regards Zac

Is your tap ph what counts. Ph can be all over the place when a tanks cycling.
What substrate do you have, and ornaments.

Personally I would let it be for the time being as a pH of 8.4 is optimal for bacteria growth. Which will probably make your tank cycle a lot faster than average!

Hi Wilder,
Very small gravel .. approx the size 1/8 of a inch circumference, a few plastic fake plants (6) and a plastic fake log... thats it Regard Zac

Has the gravel been bought from an lfs.

Ok.
I wouldn't worry to much it might just be the cycle altering ph.
Is there any fish in the tank.

Yes.. it was then boiled and strained well before putting in tank.. also all the plastic plants were well washed etc Regards
Did you do the vinegar test to see if it is good to go?

Take some substrate and drop some vinegar on it.

If it fizzes = bad substrate

If no fizz = good substrate

Also, water dechlor has been proven to raise the pH of water if the waters KH is low.

Even high levels of Ammonia can raise the pH as well.

Which won't be the case when the cycle has completed because the Ammonia level will be near zero.

Yeah the vinegar test it good to know, especially when you want to add rocks to the tank that you may have found outside, just do the vinegar test to see of they are good for the tank!
